“The Thoughts of God”

II Corinthians 10:3-5

“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” St. Paul is talking about very deep things. He is going to the foundation of human personality. We do not know what is at the foundation of our personality. Here St. Paul speaks of casting down every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God. Man’s imagination is very powerful. He builds castles in the mind which Satan makes to appear very real.

These castles stand against the eternal plans of God. Such a man has no time for God. He aims at worldly distinction by denying himself the Word of life. Gen.6:5, “And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” God saw that there was something very wrong at the very foundation of human personality. One day the imagination will press their claim and explode and destroy your personality.

Absalom’s thoughts were like that. He thought he would soon be the king. He would kill his father and imprison his brothers. But he did not know that soon he would hang on a tree with arrows piercing through his heart. Unless, through our meditations and prayer, we pull down these imaginations and fill ourselves with the thoughts of God, we are in danger. Jacob relied on his own imaginations. He sowed the seeds of trouble in his own family. Abraham’s imaginations were under the control of God. God Told him, “Ishmael is not your son. I will give you your own son.” He was imagining that Eliezer would succeed him. But God said, “No, look at the stars, so will your children be.” Temptation was hammering at Joseph’s door even though he was raised above all the servants in his house and made steward. This temptress woman would have made him very comfortable in Egypt. But he tore up that imagination. Many start their spiritual life well. But they yield to worldly ambitions and they lose touch with God. Moses did not yield to such imaginations. The question of how to deliver the people of Israel must have engaged his mind. He went to God day after day for a revelation of his plans. A servant of God must be very careful about his imaginations.

St. Paul had a war within him but his weapons were not carnal but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds. You must say, “I must marry so and so because I promised her in my unconverted days.” Will you carry out what you determined in you madness? Satan knows God’s plans to a certain extent. So before you can enter into those plans he wants to put in his thoughts. Satan wants to destroy your usefulness that way. Demas followed St. Paul for sometime. Later he loved the world and departed from St. Paul. St. Paul says our weapons are not carnal. Daniel prayed and prayed till his own plans and thoughts were destroyed and God’s plans entered into his mind.

Germany’s plans in the First World War were overthrown in spite of their scientific preparations. A vital crop of potatoes on which the army was dependent failed. Germany’s hope was crushed. Men of science have their own imaginations based on their knowledge of scientific facts and philosophy. But that imagination can fail. Be careful. Are you established in the thoughts of God?

“Thou Will Light My Candle”

Psalm 18:28

“For thou wilt light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness.” The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord. But if this is not burning, the inside of man is dark. The Spirit of God kindles the lamp in the spirit of man. This has been made possible because of the Cross of Jesus. The light of the righteous burns brighter and brighter as the days go on. As the spirit of man is lighted and the flame burns, brighter and brighter, God puts into him His power. When a man realises that every fibre of his being needs to be cleansed, washed and burned with fire and that no part of his being is worthy of God, then he will have total dependance on God. We tend to think that some part of us is really good. There Satan gets a chance to deceive us.

But God takes delight in us. As we get purified, we get charged with the love of God so that our words will have great power and find their mark to change man. As you hold the Word of God in you with the grip of faith, there will be power in you. To know the Scriptures is power. You must be so saturated with the knowledge of God that Satan cannot deceive you. A church is powerful when many members in it believe the Word. A home is powerful if many members in it believe the Word. God is seeking for an opportunity to speak to you and warn you when you meditate on the Word of God. Your main striving must be to keep the Word of God. How much are you under the authority of the Scripture?

When you are saved, it does not mean you are perfect. You are saved to be made perfect. By faith you are being purified and released from the world. Jesus had a ready answer for the temptations that came to Him. God will so prepare our personality that we have a ready answer to all temptations and thus we may be fearless. God is very gentle with us. He knows our weakness at every stage. Like a father He pities us.

With God there is plenteous redemption. Why then do you fail?— because you do not pray enough. During long hours of prayer, God gets a chance to guide you. Once Satan gave me a kind thought but a wrong thought. I had already entertained it for six months. It was deepening its roots in me. But when I chose to spend a long time in prayer, one day God took that opportunity to show me it was wrong and to take it out of me. God is zealous to increase and perfect our light.

“The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways” Late Mr. N. Daniel.

Proverbs 14:14

“The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: and a good man shall be satisfied from himself.” The moment we backslide, the devil puts into us his own thoughts. The devil waits for the time of backsliding to mislead us with his thoughts. There was a man working with me. He was a backslider and I did not know it. He used to be full of suggestions about how our work should be done. I used to pray about his suggestions. Seeing God’s guidance being contrary to them, I used to drop them. After sometime he said that his stay with me was a drawback to the Fellowship and he went away. Later he ruined himself. It is dangerous to be with backsliders. Only in the company of children of God they have a chance of being corrected. They won’t see their faults. They will see faults only in true children of God. “A good man will be satisfied from himself.” You will be satisfied, when you are right with God. You will feel happy with the Word of God. You will be happy with the children of God. A heart set right according to the Word of God will be filled with supreme satisfaction—and that is heaven. God out of love, made you for heaven. When you go to Him you are satisfied. In all people, even the worst of men there is longing for God, because we were made for God.

“Wisdom resteth in the heart of him that hath understanding.” If you seek God’s righteousness you will be the head and not the tail. Nations that will not serve God will perish. God always thinks and plans long ahead. He will give you a spirit of good-will for others. Heaven is that state when your conscience never pricks you because you are right with God. But you are thinking of just the next morrow and of yourself. “Will people praise me tomorrow?” is the question engaging your mind. But do you know God wants to make you an eternal excellency? “A good man will be satisfied from himself.” This is the work of God. When your nature becomes the divine nature, what more would you want? Isaiah 61:4 & 6, “And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations. But ye shall be named the Priests of the LORD: men shall call you the Ministers of our God: ye shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves.” Do you know that God is preparing you to be light that will last for many generations? When you die, will anyone think of you as one who has turned the course of his life or the course of his family’s life from darkness into light? You must first attain that state in which you are completely satisfied with your Lord. With you in Him and He in you Christ will guide you.

“You Are Not Your Own”

Luke 9:23-26

24th verse “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall have it.” Jesus Christ is speaking a great truth here. The maxims of the Bible are contrary to the maxims of the world. If anyone wants to be exalted he must humble himself. If anyone wants to be filled with grace and power, he must first die. If anyone wants to be wise, he must first become a fool.

The sermon on the mount is the natural outcome of a regenerate life, developed fully. It is simply wonderful how Jesus states things that are going to be your experience. Unfortunately we do not take God at His Word. Hence we do not see the fruit. If people do not believe in humbling themselves and confessing their sins, how can they see such fruit? But if we are truly born of the Spirit, we will find that all that are God’s are ours and all ours are God’s. God will be in you and you in God. How happy you will feel when all your children belong to God! Why do people hesitate to give their children to God? They do not accept the fact that their children belong to God anyway and not to themselves and they have no claim on them more than God has.

I Corinthians 6:19, “What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?” We are not our own. Do you know that your body is not yours? Then you will know how to adorn it, when you go to worship God. Your face is not yours. Is your face acceptable before God? When you wash your heart with the Word of God, heavenly beauty will come into your face. I saw a woman whose face was shining. On speaking to her I learnt her heart was changed. You are not your own. It is a great step in spiritual life to know you are not your own. If you have not come to that level you must weep. Many mothers are to blame for the illness and the sufferings of their children. It is because they do not come to the place of knowing they are not their own. The time is coming when you are going to throw away your body and your dresses.

You are not your own. You think that house is yours. No it is not. To the extent you use it for God’s glory it is yours. You have built a house but you will not occupy it for long because you think it is your own. Saul thought the throne was his own. He lost it. I Chron.17:27, “Now therefore let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant, LORD, and it shall be blessed for ever.” He wanted God to bless Solomon. He asked Solomon not to depend on anything except seeking God with a perfect heart. Hence the kingdom was retained by David.

He that loseth his life, he that loseth his property, he that loseth his bigness shall gain them. Your wife is not your own. She is the gift of God. Do you keep her so and treat her so? If not, you are losing the riches of His glory refered to in John 17:10, “And all mine are thine, and thine are mine: and I am glorified in them.” John 17:21, “That they all may be one; as thou Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.” How glorious it is when we give up our all to God. What a great confidence you will have in God when you feel all those that are in your house and all the things in your house belong to God. I know a man who prayed for his son who was dying. God gave him back his son. That father is now bringing him up for the world. Ungrateful man! Abraham gave his son to God and God gave him back to Abraham. He brought up Isaac for God. Isaac then become a blessing to the whole world.

“I am the God of thy father”

Exodus 31:1-8

“I am the God of thy father.” God knows our fathers. God knows your father, God knew Moses’ father. “I am the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.” Why was God so particular to mention Moses’ father? God knew Moses’ father was a man of God, full of faith. By faith the parents of Moses hid him three months against the law of Pharaoh. If they were not people of faith, Moses would have been meat for the crocodiles. There are many crocodiles in this world which destroy the souls of children. But many parents are careless. Many children are in the power of the devil because of the carelessness of the parents. Their one desire is to gather money in this world.

Moses’ father was a praying man. Instead of being thrown into the river Nile, the prayer of his father threw him into the palace of Pharaoh. It was a place where the best learning of those times was available.

Satan is reigning in this world. His one desire is to see you destroyed. John 10:10″The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” Satan wants to destroy your children. He wants to destroy them during their teens. When their faith in Christ is destroyed they are as good as dead. When those who do not study the Word of God are the elders of churches, faith cannot grow there. So children’s faith is destroyed before they grow into manhood and before they enter married life.

God wanted a deliverer to lead Israel. He looked for a home where there was faith and where there was righteousness. He wanted parents with faith who prayed for their children every day. God found one family where both the parents believed in Him. The eldest son and the eldest daughter believed in God. Here was an atmosphere where a deliverer could grow. The father, mother and sister and brother covered the new born infant with prayer. They gave the babe more than food and physical care. They gave him faith and righteousness. God heard their prayer. He preserved the babe. God also gave him a good earthly education. God answered their prayer further by continuing his education after he had learnt all that there was to learn in Egypt. He was now in new surroundings where sheep were his companions. It was a wilderness. In similar places John the Baptist, Elijah and other deep men of God were educated. The proximity of men of unfaith is a great contamination. Here in the wilderness, God educated him. You receive your highest degree when you are educated by God. God said, “Come on, Moses, I remember your father’s prayers. They are all before me. I remember, I remember the promise I made to Abraham. I have seen the tears of my people. I am God and I am bound by my covenant. Remove your shoes. This is a holy place. A man perfectly educated by the Holy Spirit finds a holy place at hand. God visited him and spoke to him. He anointed him and gave him many signs to convince Israel that he had been sent by God.

Good Tree Bringeth Forth Good Fruit”

Matt. 7:17-20

“Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.” Verse 17. Everybody knows this. Have you ever gone and eaten margosa fruit? Margosa fruit is very bitter. No one thinks they are as sweet as grapes. The margosa tree produces bitter fruits. “A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” Verse 18, 19 & 20. By now our fruits should have filled the world; Punjab, Tibet, China and Russia. But somehow, we have not become perfect in love. You know the bottle-neck. In most of our lives, love is the bottle-neck. There is not an outpouring love. Please note, that love and holiness go together. The Bible says, “He that abideth in love abideth in God.” We have unlimited opportunities to love. But we have to learn to love as Jesus loves. Sometimes, we get very angry with the wrong-doer. That is our natural response. What is God’s answer to the wrong-doer? The Cross. What an answer! Any wrong-doer when he comes to the Cross, he is dumb-founded. His self-defence and self justification cease. We do not have such love; we do not exercise such love; we do not use this answer. We believe in the might of our own arms and our own words. No, the Cross is the answer. There is so much wickedness around us- so much that should not be there. What is the answer? What is God’s answer? He can throw us off into the fire- every one of us, me, you, everyone. But what is His answer? “I have taken your sins on Me.” I find that very hard to do. My natural zeal makes me feel very angry at sin. But what is Jesus’ answer? “Father forgive them.” When they were nailing Him to the Cross He prayed, “Father, forgive them.” When they were nailing Him to the Cross He prayed, “Father, forgive them.” If we also were like that, our fruit would fill the earth. My dear people, let us not be talkers. That is why Jesus closed His Sermon on the Mount like this: “Not everyone that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my father which is in heaven.”

Let us not be afraid of God’s will. We have many natural fears. Fear comes because of lack of faith. And out of that fear comes disobedience. Jesus completes His Sermon on the Mount on the note of obedience. “I have told you all these things. If you do them, you will be like one built on the rock, if you do not do these, you will have a great fall.” Why should we fall? Why should we fail in love? Why should we allow the devil to bring all fears and unfaith? See, God has surrounded us with works of faith. But still we can entertain fears and work negatively. And that will only make us go far away from God. But, when we obey, in effect we are saying, “My Father, I know, you take care of me. I know, you have got more than adequate provision for me – more than my needs. I will not listen to my natural fears or to the world. I will look to you.”
